I have a new love and the name is Kumato Tomato. Oh my can we say delish! It was love at first taste when we were introduced at a happy hour at Brio when I ordered their Caprese Salad. {Unfortunately Brio no longer creates their salad with Kumato Tomatoes.}
Kumato Tomato
The Kumato is a trade name given to the variety of tomato developed in Spain called “Olmeca”, which went by experimental number SX 387.
As the Kumato is a hybrid, planted seeds will not grow plants identical to the parent.
I thought I would be smart and save some seeds from my little brown friends only to find out that since the tomato is a hybrid, I wouldn’t get the results I wanted. Disappointed I would never taste them again, I was happy to find them at Whole Foods Market for sale. Sold in a package of 6 by Sunset Grown, I quickly started going through the packages to find the perfect one to take home with me.
The European-bred Kumato™ is a round brown package of pure delight. It delivers a complex flavor that is succulent, sweet, and slightly tart.
The taste is different than other tomatoes and they are amazing by themselves, with a pinch of salt, or in salads.
This tomato lover is happy to have found a resource locally for my newest obsession. Have you seen them at other stores? Please share the details by commenting below.
