How to Make the Perfect Crostini

Okay, well these might not be the perfect crostinis but my daughter thinks so! You would think that toasting bread in the oven wouldn’t have too many variations but we do ours a little different that it gives it some flavor.

Crostino (meaning “little toast” in Italian) is an Italian appetizer consisting of a small slice of grilled or toasted bread and toppings. The toppings may include a variety of different cheeses, meats, and vegetables, or may be presented more simply with a brush of olive oil and herbs or a sauce. Crostini are typically made using Italian ciabattas and are often served with wine.

Along with bruschetta, crostini are thought to originate in medieval times when it was typical for Italian peasants to eat their meals on slices of bread instead of using ceramics.

I will head to the clearance aisle at my store to save 30% on the loaves I buy and once they are toasted, you cannot tell the difference. My family also prefers the smaller loaves so they are easier to eat — just pop in your mouth in one bite and avoid the potential of a larger piece breaking when you bite into it.

While Alex prefers to eat them plain, Bob and I like to top ours with Roasted Peppers to make a bruschetta.

What is your favorite way to use crostinis?
