Karma is our most recent fur baby, who we adopted 2 1/2 years ago. She is a 140 pound Tibetan Mastiff who was a puppy mill mom whose life consisted of living caged in a backyard with little to no human contact.
When we started fostering her she was an emotional wreck, which is more than an understatement. She was terrified of every sudden movement, sound, and everything around her that was new. Even now she is still nervous and unsure of strangers. We knew she had some health issues but because she was a foster, we didn’t know the extent of what was wrong with her.

I will never forget the day that the foster program manager called to tell me they found her a new home and wanted to know when the new owners could come to our house to meet her. Panic quickly sat in and then the tears. I called my husband and without saying much to him he knew what happened and what was going to happen… we had a new family member.

First, let me say having black dogs lends itself to photography challenges and trying to get a great photo of them can be difficult at times. We are constantly trying to capture our kiddos cute moments only to find black blobs on the screen. Sometimes we will get lucky with the lighting to get a shot of them we can keep.

She is the most gentle “beast” and has accepted our family as her own, including our zoo of other animals. Yes, my husband says we have a zoo with 3 cats, 1 green cheek conure, now 2 dogs, and 1 ferret {we had 2 but lost our Gizzy boy last year}.

Part of Karma’s daily regimen to keep the pain low so she can be more mobile.
For the past six months or more Karma has struggled with walking due to severe arthritis. My first thought was it because of her caged history and lack of exercise but our vet informed us it was genetics.
All the options to make her comfortable are from an extremely expensive surgery to remove floating bone chips to expensive injections that are $75 each {up to twice a week} to help alleviate the pain. She had a “meds box} {see above} that we keep all her goodies in that help her walk and not feel as much pain as she would without the meds.
Once I started researching her prescribed medications from the vet, I soon realized that they were also used for people too! {Oh, and that we are paying way more through the vet!}
I can’t wait until Karma’s next appointment to have her prescriptions sent to and filled by Walgreen’s instead of using the vet. Not only will it be cheaper, it is several miles closer to my home. Another reason is they are a HUGE advantage is also that we don’t have to spend 10 – 15 minutes trying to convince Karma to get into the car. She is very scared of the entire process and is not a dog that knows how to jump – seriously – as you can see above Bob has to pick up her back end to help her into the car.
Now, Black Jack on the other hand… we have to keep him inside while loading the car and you can see him above ripping around the corner to run and jump into the car.
Setting up Karma through the Walgreens website was very easy and now that she is registered, our scripts will be sent directly to my nearby Walgreens for pick up. Since I was already registered with the Walgreens website with my Balance Rewards card, the entire process took me less than 1 minute to complete.
