How to Prepare Leeks

How to Prepare Leeks

Leeks are one of my favorite vegetables to use as their subtle flavor adds to any dish.

Unfortunately they can be a pain in the butt to wash but here’s an easy way to prepare the leeks which will have you enjoying leeks in your recipes in no time! The reason they can be a pain is because the dirt grows in between the layers of the leek and you want to make sure that all that grit is gone!

Some people are intimated by leeks as they don’t know what to do with them. You can use them in any recipe to replace onions {although in some dishes, I use them together AND WITH GARLIC TOO!}

Below is a list of some of favorite ways to include leeks in our dishes {we will add these recipes once we make them}:

  • Leek and Mushroom Risotto
  • Leek Potato Soup
  • Pirasa
  • Using leeks in different pasta sauces
  • Leek and orzo salad
  • Potato and leek casserole {yes, potatoes and leeks go very well together}

The leek is a vegetable that belongs, along with onion and garlic, to the genus Allium… The edible part of the leek plant is a bundle of leaf sheaths that is sometimes erroneously called a stem or stalk. {Wikipedia}

How to Prepare Leeks

First you will trim both ends by cutting off the roots from the white end and the tough dark green part from the other end.

Once each end is removed they should look above. Then, slice them in 1/2 and place the flat side on the cutting board to then thinly slick them to look like the photo below. {If needed, you can slice again lengthwise to make them quartered. For the recipe we were using these for we only cut them in 1/2.}

Once they are cut, add them to a bowl of cold water and work them into the water so the grit will be sink to the bottom and the leeks will stay afloat at the top.

See how cloudy the water is above — that was all in my leeks!

How easy was that?! Now, to go cook some of our favorite dishes to share with you. Come back soon as we will be adding those recipes I mentioned above.

What is your favorite recipe which includes leeks? Comment below as we would love to read it!
